Tics for slider layout
Written by apps the 2 Feb 10 at 10:06. Related project: 1.x all. New
Tics (aka tic marks) should be visible under the slider bar.

See this sketch: http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/5295/10403feb10095848.gif

benefits: easy read, make it clear it's a slider with discrete values, catch where the handle is in respect to left and right limits.

Details:
type = multiple numerical input
options:
use slider layout = 1
slider min = 0
slider max = 10
slider accurancy = 1

reset slider answer
Written by opirnia the 22 Nov 09 at 17:13. Related project: 1.x all. New
we are running limesurvey version 1.85+ (7337).

In questions using multiple numeric answers with sliders, sometimes we have answers that the participant can skip if they wish.

If they have clicked at all on the slider answer before deciding to skip it, however, a value is recorded. They can then slide back and forth after that but cannot go back to no value (so are in effect at that point forced to answer/have an answer value recorded).

We would like a way for participants to reset the slider value to nothing (not zero but no value) as if they had never clicked on the slider at all.

perhaps a button directly to the right of the slider answer might somehow reset it. Text on (or next to) the button might say "skip" or "no answer"

The 'exclude_all_others' attribute sould be available for any kind of Multiple
choice questions like:
P - Multiple Options with Comments
Q - Multiple short text
K - Multiple Numerical

and not just for:
?M - Multiple Options

It would be great if the 'other option' could be choosen as well to exclude all others.

Offline Surveys
Written by holch the 26 Feb 10 at 02:31. Related project: 2.x all. New
I was thinking about this quite a while already. It is not always possible to do a interview online (CAWI) or via telephone (CATI). When programming is necessary CAPI comes into the game.

However, most CAPI-Tools are old and boring and additionally you have to have still another program.

However, wouldn't it be greate to be able to use Limesurvey for all those purposes. However, even with UMTS/3G it is not always possible or reliable enough to do it with a online survey tool.

Solution #1: Limesurvey CAPI feature

In times of Google Gears and HTML5 I was wondering if it would be possible to use the survey offline?

Tine20.org for example is using Gears to make the application usable offline. Or Gmail, etc.

I am not sure if this is possible with a very complex and flexible tool like Limesurvey, but maybe it is?

Combine "Multiple Short Text" with "Radio list"
Written by sociolog the 8 Sep 10 at 04:15. Related project: 1.x all. New
When we want the respondents to provide a list of open answers, we may want to also include some coded answers. For example, when we ask about one's favorite three congressmen, we can use a "Multiple Short Text" with three subquestions to name the congressmen, but also a few precoded answers, such as "I don't have any favourite congressmen" or "I don't know any congressmen". It would look something like this:

Q1. Who are your favorite three congressmen?
1._________
2._________
3._________
8. I don't have any favorite congressmen
9. I don't know any congressmen

There is currently the possibility of using "Multiple options with comments" type of question, but the comments appear in every answer, and in my example, there would be no need for a "comment" form for answers 8 or 9.

Solution #1: either make a new type of question or modify the old ones
Written by sociolog the 8 Sep 10 at 04:15.
1. A new type of question where one may select which answers are open and which are closed

2. An "advanced option" for the "Multiple options with comments" type of question to enable the possibility of hiding comments for some answer options (like 8 or 9 in my example).

The array filter attribute should be more broadly usable
Written by joe_p the 16 Mar 10 at 19:17. Related project: 1.x all. New
In surveys where an array (flexible labels) question is used, sometimes the answers are the same as a previous question of the same type. It would be helpful to be able to filter out answers from one array question to the next, if the survey programmer decides the second question's answers should be dependent on the first's.

So I propose an option for the array filter attribute to be able to base off of an array (flexible labels) question type, and not just a multiple options question type.

Also, this would apply the same for Array (flexible labels) Dual Scale. We initially used this question type for a survey, and wanted to lock the second scale answers if someone selected "not applicable" in the first set of questions. So we broke out the questions into two array (flexible labels) questions, but still weren't able to get the functionality we wanted. Having the ability to filter based on other question types would provide the necessary functionality.

Solution #1: Add functionality to base array filter questions on array questions
Written by joe_p the 16 Mar 10 at 19:17.
Extend the functionality for the array filter attribute so it can be based on an array (flexible labels) question, instead of just a multiple options question. The same functionality would be helpful for Dual Scale question attributes as well, and perhaps other question types.

To let respondents skip not mandatory questions
Written by bianconijo the 2 Nov 09 at 23:49. Related project: 1.x all. New
I am experiencing the same issue with twodifferent kinds of question:
1) I have set up a multiple numerical input question so that the people who decide to answer must distribute 100 points (%) into a few categories (equals_num_value = 100). This question is set up as not mandatory. However when one decides to skip it and go on, a warning saying that the question must be properly answered appears. In this way it is not possible to go on without answering this question, which is what I don't want. I would like people to be free to answer or not this question. Those who decide to answer must answer properly, that is they must distribute 100 points into given categories;
2) the same thing happens in a ranking question. The question is not mandatory: so the people who decide to answer must rank all the listed categories (7), while those who decide to skip it must have the chance to go on without answering.

Solution #2: Make question attribute code and mandatory check work together more smoothly
Written by Mazi the 6 Nov 09 at 16:47.
I suggest to take a look at the question attribute code of "max/min_answers". If the question is not mandatory there should be no check if the question was filled out according to the attributes set.
If the question is mandatory the user has to answer the question correctly according to the values set for max/min_answers.

Solution #1: Add warning to List survey display with estimated field size shown
Written by tringate the 20 May 10 at 14:53.
Add a column in the survey list screen to give estimated survey table size.

The database type is known, and the estimated table sizes limits are known. A survey could be scanned and an estimated table size shown and those nearing the limits could be displayed in a different color.

Here is what the manual says about table size and unfortunatly after writting a very long survey and then trying to activate it I discovered I was way over the limit of what my database would accept.

...regarding survey size
Note: 'Survey size' refers to the maximmum number of questions (and answers) in your survey - don't confuse this with the number of replies on your survey (there is no limitation on that). Theoretically there would also be no limit on the maximum number of questions/answers in LimeSurvey. But the database engine you are using has several limits. The most important one is the limit on the number of fields(columns) in the result table.

•MySQL ISAM: The sum of the lengths of the VARCHAR and CHAR columns in a table may be up to 64KB.
•MySQL InnoDB: Maximum number of 1000 columns
•MS SQL Server 2000: Maximum number of 1024 columns
•Postgres: Maximum number of 250-1600 columns depending on column types. The maximum number of columns can be quadrupled by increasing the default block size to 32k. See Installation FAQ and PostgreSQL FAQ.

The mySQL ISAM engine is the most tricky one. As it allows only up to 65,535 bytes per row and utf8 characters can require up to three bytes per character the maximum may be only 21,844 characters (but this depends on your DB encoding).
You can roughly calculate the size of your survey like this:

•Every multiple numerical question: 20 chars for each answer
•Every multiple choice & array question answers: 5 chars for each answer
•Every other question type: 5 chars
•Add 10% for the usual overhead

Add meio-Mask Plugin to LimeSurvey for Input Mask feature
Written by halliballi123 the 17 Oct 11 at 09:28. Global category: Question types. New
meio-Mask Plugin is a javascript plugin that allows to create input masks for input fields.

in the workarounds page there is described how to make use of that.
http://docs.limesurvey.org/Workarounds%3A+Manipulating+a+survey+at+runtime+usin g+Javascript&structure=English+Instructions+for+LimeSurvey#Text_input_masks

but that is not really comfortable and you have to manually set the ids of the questions

Solution #1: add meiomask plugin to limesurvey and add feature for editing questions
Written by halliballi123 the 17 Oct 11 at 09:28.
add additonal field for input mask (like e.g. validation field)
if there is text in the field,

1 ) limesurvey has to add the script in the head of the html question page.

2 ) and set the alt tag of the input field to the mask

3 ) call setmask for the field

that's all

I also could imagine not just having a text field for the input mask, I could imagine having a drop down list of predefined masks of which I chose the one I want to use for the input field. like e.g. decimal or singed-decimal or german phone number format ...

but if there is a drop down that contains the list of input masks there also has to be a posibillity to edit those entries and add addtional input masks for the user.

"Other answer" at a certain position in the list
Written by jelo the 11 Nov 09 at 12:51. Related project: 1.x all. New
If you have "No answer" globally deactivated, you sometimes add an item "No answer" by hand to certain questions.

If you then want to use "other answer", the position of "other answer" is below "No answer".

So it would be a common feature to allow "Other answer" at a certain position in the list.

The most flexible way, would be to allow a "Other answer" field behind every item in the list.

Solution #1: Checkboxes behind the item list
Written by jelo the 11 Nov 09 at 12:51.
First idea would be to set position via checkboxes behind the item list, which would mean that the other box is displayed below this item.

The idea to allow to display a "other answers" behind every item would need additional fields beside the checkboxes.

Solution #2: Make the global 'No answer' option question-specific
Written by c_schmitz the 11 Nov 09 at 13:33.
I guess the better change would be to make the global 'no answer' option available per question. That way you can use it when you need it. This new option should only by available if question is set to be not mandatory.

Solution #1: Short textbox attribute

I think an attribute choice of "password entry" for the short free text question type would work. If you wanted to get fancier, you could give the developer a choice of characters that would appear instead of the password, but this would not be necessary.

fixing more answer order within random order answers
Written by vs_arni the 28 Sep 09 at 15:30. Related project: 1.x all. New
Hi, I will explain with an example...

In sociopolitical surveys, often we use this questions:
"Which party will you vote next sunday?"

Answers are the number of the parties and three possibility for not voting:
"I will not vote", "I will vote but I do not know which party yet", "I don't want to tell you".

I would like to display parties in random order and the "non vote" answer in fixer order.

Like this:

2 Party 2
3 Party 3
1 Party 1
...
10 Party 10
(in random order)
11 I will not vote
12 I will vote but I do not know which party yet
13 I don't want to tell you
(in fixed order)

Thanks,

Self- modifying list of alternatives in ranking questions
Written by paul_murphy the 16 Nov 09 at 23:09. Related project: 1.x all. New
hi:

I'm a long time phpsurveyor/limesurvey fan - cf : http://blogs.zdnet.com/Murphy/index.php?p=513 .

Right now I'm on day one of a project requiring some extended delphi type studies - meaning that I don't yet have many clues about what to do or how to do it.

Nevertheless I'm looking at Limesurvey because it appears to have all, or almost all, the parts needed to do this. However, it seems there's one capability which I don't think you have that would make a difference for this use of your product.

It's a self-modifying question type: one in which the answers available to the survey taker vary dynamically with the input from other people taking the survey - vide:

1X Our consultants are recommending biometric locks for lab and office doors as well as the supplies and components cabinets. In this context, how would you rank the alternatives listed below?

1X1 Accept consultant's recommendation
1X2 Stick to existing mechanical locks
1X3 Switch to hotel like card locks
1X4 or ? _____________________________

So someone fills in:

1X4 or? replace employee cards with the Sun Ray cards, and use them for the doors too

and now I want the next person to load the question to see the alternatives as:

Sometimes the users location is important

For a vast number of usercases it would be very usefull to have the users physical location automatically and easily saved as a variable.

It could be for community projects or store evaluations/customer feedback.

Solution #1: Use modern browsers geolocation / W3 Geolocation API
Written by lovepade the 26 Nov 10 at 14:33.
I might be mistaken - but for a java wiz I guess it should be very easy to include this functionality?

Here is an early post from firefox: https://hacks.mozilla.org/2009/06/geolocation/
and the w3 specification http://www.w3.org/TR/geolocation-API/

All modern smartphone browsers and new chrome/firefox/safari/opera has this capability.

Everything works transparent: The user has to agree to give up the physical location. - So it's just an easy way to obtain the relevant info.

Ideally the user could be shown a map (like this example: https://www.mozilla.com/en-GB/firefox/geolocation/) and accept or choose to refine.

I guess long/lat will be the easiest to implement. Then later someone might provide an adress lookup.

More flexibility with hidden questions
Written by yohann the 25 Feb 11 at 12:13. Related project: 1.x all. New
The base idea is that a question should behave the same way hidden or shown.
the only thing to change should be the show/not show question for the end user.

- Javascript/jquery in a hidden question should work
- conditions should apply to the hidden question to (ie the question is either hidden, or not asked)

I'm not sure i made it very clear, i try reformulate:

the only distinction between a hidden question (always hide this question) and a "nomal" question should be the screen display.

Solution #1: Use css "display: none;" instead of not showing question
Written by yohann the 25 Feb 11 at 12:13.
This should work for "all in one page" and "group by group" survey, thought it can be more complicated for question by question survey, so the hidden question should then be added "before the next" / "after the previous" question depend if it is the first, last or a middle question and the be hidden by css.

This way the js can be executed and answer fields can be filled

Written by Mazi the 28 Oct 09 at 16:28.
I'm pretty sure Limesurvey will stick to the policy of not mixing different questions types. This is because you need valid functions to store data at the database and to show results and the like. Therefore the type of data has to be fixed.

I suggest to create a flexible layout for Limesurvey 2 which allows the user to place different question blocks besides each other. You can use one question text and one set of answers but different questions (= input types) within this block.
